Fishing in the lower berg river estuary
The lower Berg River near Velddrif forms a tidal estuary where freshwater meets the Atlantic, creating a productive environment for a variety of fish. Popular species include elf (shad), garrick (leervis), cob (kabeljou), harders (mullet), white stumpnose, white steenbras, and smaller estuary fish like karanteen and steentjie.
Fishing is often best on the incoming tide, using natural bait such as sardines, mud prawns, or squid, though lures work well for predatory species. Anglers can fish from the riverbank at Quagga River Lodge.
