What to expect
The Berg River Estuary is one of the defining natural attractions of the Velddrif area and a major part of what makes this stretch of the Cape West Coast so special.
Where the river meets the Atlantic, the mix of tidal water, mudflats, marshes and reed-lined channels creates an important wetland ecosystem that is known for its scenic beauty and rich birdlife.
Visitors can witness flocks of pelicans, flamingos, herons, and cormorants, often moving through the tidal channels or resting along the mudflats, while smaller waders forage along the edges.
The estuary is internationally recognised for its ecological value and was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2022.
